the return of my favorite show

It's time for So You Think You Can Dance to come back tonight! Of course we have to endure the auditions which can be entertaining too... but it really starts to cook by the top 20. I'm never satisfied with Dancing with the Stars, never even watch that show except to catch what's left before Castle came on. It was too cheesy for me, and ballroom can be thrilling, if it's on SYTYCD :)

I really wish (and I have emailed this wish to Fox many times) that So You Think You Can Dance would come out on DVD, if not the whole seasons then at LEAST the top 20 or highlights from the season.

But since they don't, we'll have to settle for watching them online at great sites like this:

All aboard the hot tamale train! whooooooo hooo!

  1. Hey! @Calabash11 here. You're so right - SYTYCD is the BEST competition show on tv. It has far more integrity & heart than all the other shows, and a far higher calibre of performers. Just amazing every week.

  2. except I got really pissed at Nijel last night for the comments he made to the couple of male ballroom dancers. I'll admit it was a bit odd, but Nijel's jokes were really inappropriate... comparing them to Blades of Glory?? But I cry when Mary cries, and scream when she does :) Most of the time that show makes me insanely happy!

Belly Dance Practice On The Go

Hey dancers - frustrated because your budget or time doesn't allow for belly dance class? Do you spend countless hours behind a computer desk wishing you could be practicing dance instead? Well good news, you can practice isolations just about anywhere!  Sitting at your desk :   1. alternating glute squeezes.   This is pretty easy to do without anyone noticing (so long as your face isn't making a weird expression. :) As you hopefully know, alternating squeezing each butt cheek is a great way to build up your shimmy strength (while also building muscle memory). First make sure you have the correct posture. Then focus the mind on right cheek, squeeze and then left. If you can only do it slowly that's just fine, it's still an effective exercise and eventually you'll easily speed up. For more info on glute squeezes see Shira's website .  2. pelvic tuck, glute squeeze (both together).   Make sure your posture is correct. Sit toward the back of your chair wi...

lame lyrics

"so many things i want to tell you, everything i want to share, just gets blogged or tweeted even though those folks don't care. everything that makes me laugh or break out into a smile, fills me with a need to see you even just a little while." totally corny right? was just a random thought I had a week ago when missing my man. I dunno my biggest flaw as a musician is my inability to connect melodies I write to genuinely good lyrics. There's definitely an art to writing for songs versus writing poetry or stories. I think it baffles me most because what I consider great lyrics are so painfully simple, yet NOT if you get my point. I've been trying to pay attention to songs that really move me and pay close attention to the lyrics. The Cliks album Dirty King is a great example (it's not officially released yet but I bought a copy at their concert). Lucas' lyrics are powerful, yet just vague enough that they can be interpreted many ways and therefore h...

adventures in dance

In searching for one bit of information (I forget what now), I came across a huge belly dance festival here next month hosting, Rachel Brice . (She's only one of the most amazing and mesmerizing bellydancers in the world!) I've never taken a workshop with her but seen her perform a lot - and I'm so excited! The event's called Elevation 2009 and has 3 full days of workshops with many people as well as shows in the evenings. In addition, I've made friends with a very nice woman who started a new dance studio in my area of town called Studio 21 . They have classes for all ages and even adult classes like ballet, hip hop, ballroom, modern and more. She asked me if I'd be interested in teaching a beginning bellydance workshop and I'm thrilled! I've always been a bit skeptical about teaching because I'm hard on myself and never think I'm in good enough shape... but I've been a student of bellydance for over a decade so I think it's about...
